Get Started

Here are some tips to get you started!

1. SIGN In

Sign in with your U-M uniqname or a social login: LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Google, Windows Live, Yahoo!, or AOL. If you are not a U-M alumnus/alumna or Alumni Association member, you will need to request a friend account from U-M ITS here.

2. Personalize Your Profile

Click on the gray image in the top-right corner to access your profile. Next, tell alumni about yourself by adding your bio, non-U-M education, and job history. Take a moment to upload your photo.

PRO TIP: You can easily transfer some of your professional information by clicking the link that says "Import From LinkedIn."

3. Customize Your Settings

Select the “My Account” tab in your profile. In this tab, you can then click "Community Notifications" to adjust your email settings. Click "Privacy Settings" to control how much of your profile is visible to other members. Click "Email Preferences" if you want to change your email that receives community information. Under "Discussion Signature," you can set your default signature.

PRO TIP: You are automatically subscribed to the “Daily Digest” for each community you belong to, which will provide a single email each day summarizing the latest discussions happening in the community. If you want to stay on top of every message, you can adjust your setting to “Real Time” and receive messages as soon as they are posted. You can also change your notification to a weekly digest.

4. Find Alumni & Friends

Click on “Directory” in the navigation bar to find other Michigan alumni. You can search by name, location, graduation year, major, and more. Add them as contacts to share information and build your network.

PRO TIP: To better optimize your search results, we suggest searching under a legal name such as "Matthew" instead of "Matt."

5. Join or Start a Discussion

Click on “Communities” and then select “All Communities” to find your available communities. Visit the “Discussions” area within any community to see all of the conversations happening. See a thread you’d like to join? First, click “Join the Community,” and then click “Reply to Discussion” to chime in!

PRO TIP: If you wish to connect with someone privately, choose “Reply to Sender” instead of “Reply to Discussion.”

6. What's Next?

Here are a few ideas to make the most of your community experience:

  1. Find Communities - View the All Communities list and join to meet other members.
  2. Introduce Yourself - Say hello to other Michigan alumni and community members.
  3. Ask Questions - Get input from other members.
