Love joining other Wolverines at events during the year including nights at the theater, cooking classes, networking happy hours, or just watching football on Saturdays? All of these events, specials, and discounted prices are organized and run entirely by an amazing group of volunteers.
The metro DC area has more than 18,000 smart and ambitious Michigan graduates, and our volunteers, alums ranging from ’68 through ’16, give both their time and skill-sets to our Club so we can better serve the Michigan family here.
Our time at Michigan defined who we are both personally and professionally, and we are always looking for alums who want to join our team and give back to the school and community that gave us so much. We have a number of committees for every interest and expertise – described below – that you can get involved with.
Whether you have ideas for events, want to join club leadership, or simply want to help in any way you can, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We'd love to have you on our team. Go Blue!
Volunteerism is a central tenet of the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Washington, DC. The Community Service Committee aims to recruit those interested in promoting wellbeing, learning about places with demonstrated need, and taking action steps to better our communities. We accomplish this by partnering with non-profits to provide monthly service opportunities for alumni and their friends and families.
The UMDC Club Programming Committee plans and executes a variety of social, educational, and networking activities for alumni of all ages and interests. We aim to provide unique experiences to DC area Wolverines, be they newly moved to the region or lifelong DC residents. These range from sporting events and theater outings to family-friendly pumpkin picking, and from ice skating in the National Gallery Sculpture Garden to brewery tours/tastings. If you like organizing exciting, educational, interesting or fun events consider volunteering with us
The Career Development team is just getting underway.
The Communications Committee is tasked with with promoting the Club's events and gatherings, supporting fundraising efforts, and assisting all other Committees with outreach to the membership, as well as supporting the UMDC Board with editorial or promotional efforts as needed. The Committee accomplishes this by utilizing the Club website, compiling a weekly member eNewsletter, and maintaining a Club presence on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
The Scholarship Committee oversees the process for awarding a $40,000 scholarship to one high school student form the DC metro area. To do this, we prepare an application that is distributed to local high schools and made available on our website, organize a team of club members who review and comment upon the applications, and interview finalists for the award. This committee is only active in the first quarter of the year and we typically name the scholarship recipient mid-April.
This committee is responsible for developing a program of fund raising levels and requisite benefits and recognition. The committee’s goal is to raise funds to support scholarships for financially needy students in the Washington, DC area. The committee developed marketing materials and solicitation forms.
The Sports Watching Committee is involved in both outreach and maintaining relationships with our partner bars but also actively attending game watches and helping with t-shirt sales, the raffle, and even a little DJing during halftime.
