About the Scholarship
The James M. Gartenberg New York Alumni Club Scholarship Fund
The U of M Club of New York created the James M. Gartenberg New York Alumni Club Scholarship Fund to help outstanding high school students from the five boroughs of NYC enroll at the University of Michigan. The money is awarded to first-year students from NYC who demonstrate high academic achievement and a financial need. The number of scholarships varies year to year, ranging from one to three and is dependent on the amount of money available for distribution.
How you can help

The club raises money for the fund through various methods including fundraisers, partnerships, and direct donations. Fortunately, we have been able to award $20,000 annually in total thanks to our generous supporters. James M. Gartenberg started his journey with the University of Michigan studying economics and earning an A.B. degree in 1987. But his journey with the school did not end there. After graduating, he moved back to Manhattan where he became a real estate broker and immersed himself in the U-M alumni club. He led the club as president for 12 years and spent that time inspiring members to get more involved and attracting new alumni to join. It was in this post that he caught the attention of his future wife, Jill, who he married in the following years

Mr. Gartenberg was working on the 86th floor of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, losing his life to the 9/11 tragedy. To keep his memory alive and honor his love of the University of Michigan, the NYC Chapter of the Alumni Scholarship Program is named after Mr. Gartenberg.
